The city of Istanbul. A fairy tale.A city of unmatched beauty. It is the only one in the world that straddles two continents; thousands flood to the city year round to make that special crossing.
Unfortunately, the city of Istanbul is unmatched in another sense: nowhere will you find such suffering for stray dogs (although other cities in Turkey have been competing with Istanbul for the honor). Here, take a look at these pictures taken from a “shelter” managed by the city of Istanbul.
The first dog above was rescued by volunteers from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) shelter. He was taken to a private vet where they found out that its leg had been broken into many pieces. The city vets had bandaged the leg and guess what ensued: gangrane. Broken leg, city vet, gangrane and the dog dies.
The second dog above was also at the IMM shelter. While in there, it had mange. What do you normally do when a dog has mange? Treat it. It is arguably the simplest thing for a vet to cure. You may not even need a degree for that. What did Istanbul’s dedicated public vets do? Dump it in the forest.
Some of you may not understand what “dumping in the forest” means. It is a revolutionary new way of getting rid of stray dogs invented by the local authorities of Istanbul. Dump dogs in the forest where they will starve to death! Everybody knows it. The officialdom of Istanbul know it. A high-ranking one of them issued a call recently to the mayors and city workers which read ” please do not dump your stray dogs in the city’s forests”. What a joke right? No, hellcome to Turkey.
That dog was dumped in one forest as usual, and, fortunately, a dedicated team of volunteers who run a shelter, a real one, nearby found it. It was emaciated and couldn’t stay on its feet when they found it. Now it is in good hands.
Now, if you are planning to visit Istanbul, please do not dump your dog in one of its forests – they are all full already. Better yet, don’t come to Istanbul. Sign our petition right now, and tell the Istanbul authorities that you refuse to travel to Istanbul unless and until they stop the inhumane practice of dog-dumping.

torturing especially against animals disgusts me. i cant bear looking into the eyes of those animals. i am from turkey and i think turkey needs help about this issue. i found out this site on a daily newspaper of turkey. it is good to attract attention about this. but the propaganda is weird. you protest against the animal massacre, ok i hate animals being harmed too. but to protest it, you prevent people coming to turkey. i dont know, there are also really good places to see in turkey but nevertheless this web site would be helpful to take our presidents’ attention and make them take action.

Ein paar Worte dazu: Die meisten Chinesen würden keinen Hund verspeisen, sondern halten diese wie wir als Haustiere. Außerdem handelt es sich um eine spezielle für den Verzehr gezüchtete Rasse. Gegessen werden Hunde hauptsäschlich im Winter, da das Fleisch den Körper wärmen und gut gegen Erkältung sein soll. Millionen Menschen verachten uns dafür, dass wir Kühe, Kälber oder Schweine essen. Einige Chinesen essen Hunde.

I have been reading the comments about Iraq to Palestian, Iran to Canada. We aren’t discussing the wars here we are discussing the cruelty on animals. Lets not change the subject and navigate in the different lands. We can discuss the other countries dirty business under another topc.For those, who aren’t familiar with Istanbul, just a little outside the Istanbul there lies the woods. The new strategy of the municipalities is that don’t poison them just throw them there so that they will starve to die or will be shut by people. It is a sham but it is true. I was just there last week and you got to see them tones of dogs pregnant or with babies. This is as ugly as it get Ladies and Gentelmen. If a country doesn’t have compassion and mercy toward week, will not be able show the same each other.

There is no such a thing as more important. Animals have their own rigthts to live their God given lives just like you do. Killing people in Iraq doesn’t justify murdering animals in Turkey or else where. What should we say? People are being killed in Iraq and Afganistan forget about the animals. That is nonsense! Black aren’t created for whites, women aren’t created for men, just like animals aren’t created for people to satisfy their sick and pathatic tendencies. I think the wise thing to do is to admit your mistakes and look for ways to fix them rather than denying them. Just last week Antalya Municipality killed 5000 dogs and buried them, 280 dogs were murdered by Bandirma Municipality couple months ago. I can bring up at least hundreds of similar incidents here to discuss but there isn’t enough page for it. Turkey is a beatiful country at least it was once. People use to have humility, compassion and love unlike any other countries in the world. But now things are very different. I think WHEN THERE IS NO ECONOMICAL LIBERTIY, THERE IS NO HUMANITY AND COMFORT. SO LET’S ALL KILL ALL THE ANIMALS THE WORLD WILL BE ALL OURS AND WE WILL BE HAPPY EVER AFTER.

I am appaled to see this kind of cruelty towards animals, but actually it does not surprise me. Turks are unusually brutal people that have very litle or no empathy for other people, animals or any other life form other then their own tribe. Sad but true.
Not only should people avoid Turkey as a holiday destination, it should be boycotted in all other aspects. Don’t buy any product made in Turkey. Then, perhaps, in time they will learn it doesn’t pay off to be a total scumbag towards others.
The problem exists. There is no denying it. What Turkey needs to do is admit that treating animals badly doen not give mankind a good name. And dumping dogs ina wood to starve to death is stomach churning. So is shooting them for sport.
Then, if help is needed, it should be sought by asking charities for help with neutering and homing. By keeping the dog population under control, it will be less of a problem to people. Cases where animals are treated badly will be found in every country, but let’s try to get better, let’s lead by example, let’s show the good side of humanity.
It has been scientifically shown that cruelty desensitizes human beings. Someone treating animals badly will likely also show less compassion to a human being in distress. Please, all who are involved, realize that animals need better treatment than they are getting. Please co-operate with animal welfare groups. People will volunteer and help. Money can be raised (or the money you have now could be put to better use).
The problem and the solution is so simple !
Education !
But it needs to start with the owner of this website who thinks protesting a country and not going there will sort problems. If you love animals which I do not believe, but if you do what you can do is you can try to educate these people who harms animals. You can tell them how to control animal population, you can help them open more rescue centers…
