And the angry Minister spoke, ordering,” Shut this website off!”.
Our campaign, which was started a couple of weeks ago, drew a great deal of attention. Lots of newspapers and internet sites are now writing about it. All publicity and attention must have angered the minister so much that today he made a statement to a media company. You can see the literal translation below:
A group of Englishmen started a campaign online, asserting that there are animal massacres in Turkey and saying, “Don’t go to Turkey until this is over”.This has greatly angered Minister of Culture and Tourism Mr. Ertuğrul Günay. The web site, turkeymassacre.wordpress.com may be viewed for more information. The site also broadcasts other shocking pictures; İbrahim Söker Eregli,Municipal Council Member from AKP, killing a snake by hitting its head on the ground ,pictures of a dolphin killed by tying a stone to its tail, and puppies after they have been killed. The site chose as their slogan, “I am not going to Turkey until these animal massacres are over”. Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mr. Ertuğrul Günay, reacted to the campaign saying the site broadcast will be stopped. Disclaiming the massacres, Mr. Günay indicated that he himself owns a dog anyway. Mr. Günay delivered a picture of his to journalists, petting a puppy while on a visit to Gaziantep in May. (Radikal).
You have read the news. Now you understand the reason for this boycott better. In denying the massacres it is understood that Mr. Günay didn’t spend time to view the site well enough. The “Kars Massacre” we wrote about yesterday, and the torture of one of the most innocent animals in ”Dolphin Torture” along with lots of other news, has been, and will continue to be written about………We oppose Mr.Gunay’s statements and denials about these activities. “Look, I love dogs, too. I have one in my house“. We have to admit that we think that’s amusing. That a minister of a country that wants to be a member of the EU can reply in such a simplistic, immature and ridiculous way, it is very clear to see he does not take the situation nor the animal protectionists seriously.
ESTEEMED MINISTER!: Yes, you DO have animal massacres in your country. We strongly suggest you review our site before continuing to make statements and issue orders about a subject which you so obviously know little about. Your mission is to take precautions to cease animal killings and justly penalise the responsible, more than just stating you love animals. We are not saying that you don’t love them. But what we are saying is we are not going to bring in ONE Euro to Turkey, as long as the law about animal cruelties does not change. We demand a change from the current, ridiculously low amount of money an offender is fined. We demand an increase to a much higher and more just amount of money and that jail penalties also be introduced. We demand that these fines or jail terms be mandatory to any person(s) found either causing great harm or the killing of any animal, here named as homeless or street animals. This campaign has been supported by more then 1,100 people so far. If you consider that a tourist family spends about 1,000 euros while on holiday, your country has already lost more than 1 million euros. This amount is increasing every minute which means you will end up losing millions of euros. Stopping the broadcast of this site will not change anything. Even now thousands of people are broadcasting this on their own sites to inform the world. Obviously you cannot shut down internet. Therefore, it is more logical to attend to the situation and take action. You have to actuate political dynamics, attend to the legalities, and put a new law into action. Don’t forget that in a global world every move of yours is being watched by millions of people.
OUR ONLY CONCERN IS THE WELFARE OF ANIMALS.. If you don’t make the legal arrangements we are asking for, this boycott may last for years. Don’t forget! We will not give up…..….Europe, and THE WORLD are watching you, waiting. We are ending this article with a quote from Mahatma Gandhi. We hope Turkish politicians would try to understand some from the saying:
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”
