Not a single day goes in Turkey without news of animal cruelty. In this post, we would like to share with one such – ordinary – story with you from a coastal town near Istanbul.
It is actually a classic:a group of dedicated animal lovers try to take care of the stray animals in their neighborhood to the best of their ability. Mind you they are all vaccinated, neutered and tagged. One day, a local authority decides that it is time to kill them.
The weapon of choice for the murderous campaign is usually poison. They choose the perfect timing for the heinous act as well: early morning when everybody will be sleeping.
History repeated itself in this coastal town that we are talking about just a few days ago. The dedicated animal lovers woke up to a scene of horror that day. All the dogs they had been taking care of were lying still right in front of their eyes. One of them said ” I am devastated, I feel as if they just murdered my child “.
The syringes used to poison them were spread all around. The local authorities didn’t even bother to hide the evidence of what they had done. Why would they? Hellcome to Turkey. Killing dogs en masse is as common a municipal practice as garbage collection here.

All the protest in the world, all the criminal charges filed against them, all the mountain of evidence piled up against them cannot stop the serial dog killer local authorities of this otherwise beautiful country.
And here is what the politicians of Turkey proposed to do about all this: SHUT DOWN THIS WEB SITE!! Isnt’ that just surreal?
Well dear politicİans, you may shut down this web site if you want. But that will just be a band-aid solution for you. This protest has been growing by the minute, and it is costing Turkey a lot. And it will continue to grow no matter what you do. Shut this web site down – WE WILL OPEN A NEW ONE WITHIN A MATTER OF MINUTES.
In fact, this web site is the least of your problems. Let us give you a bit of a hint: all EU countries are preparing to a joint boycott of Turkey did you hear that? What will you do then dear politicans?
Let’s make one thing crystal clear: we are here to stay one way or the other. And we hope that you are going to be with us in this ongoing battle against those criminal mayors.
If you still haven’t signed our petition, please do so now from this link. Click here.
Oh! Don’t forget to drop a line to that particular serial dog killer mayor we are talking about.
Here is his email: arifdaglar@kartal.bel.tr

No money for murderers! No vacation in Turkish hotel arrangements! There is only one reason to go in Turkey: Help the Turkish animal welfarists in your fight against lawbreakers, to liars and corruption, help the animals! Turkey in the EU?? Please, never!!!!!!!!!!!
After having seen these atrocities, I will never go to Turkey again.
Those politicians are absolutely deplorable.
The only difference between Turkey with the US or any other “civilized” country is that the street dogs do not even exist in those countries to begin with. As you probably guessed, dogs in these countries just vaporize into thin air due to loneliness they suffer from not having an owner. It has nothing to do with the state exterminating them. Dogs are very cute and affable. But you explain that to a mother whose child died of rabies after being bitten by you guessed whom. I am not supporting the way the state handles exterminating animals, but the point is that they will be exterminated as in the case with other “civilized” countries. I think there are far more important causes in the world to attend to, you guys need a reality check.
First of Sabine Nowack, -I do not know if I should havre wirrten it for you in German; in case you do not understand English-it is not up to you only to decide if TÜRKİYE will be accepted to the EU or not. You may of course, spread your opinion but if you want to boycott the tourism of our country due to this web site, and due to the animal then I really do hope that you are not one of these people who are permenantly living in ALanya or buying last minute urlaubs to our country !
In any case you should really know that there is a higher life standart in our country then yours, and you should really stop such silly propogandas about our country concerning Europe. This really sucks.
About this web page and its content; I would like to say that taking attention to facts which are not functioning as they should, is a good job, but this has been much over the limits. The municipals of course had to take actions- may be not just killing- when the street dogs are increasing and creating danger to attact people especially kids. We all remember the domestic dogs attacking the kids on the streets in the country of Sandra; and if a domestic animal can do that; imagine what can the street dogs can do. If no actions were taken then the person who has prepared this “simple” web page would be screaming that the turkish municipals are not working properly and off we go lets boycott to travel to Türkiye.
Dear who ever made this web page, before you use such harsh words, why don’t you also talk about the sexual animal abuses in these wonderful Eu countries of Sandra or even worse about the kidnapped children who are sexually abused and killed; or about the amount of foreigners in our country buying our land and field???
So please, I urge you to change the components of your web site and stop trying to harm one of the most important industies of our country.
Comments such as I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO TURKEY AGAIN! instead of LETS HELP THE ANIMALS etc are showing the real aim of this web page.
Well congrats then…
These people have hot seats in the hell waiting for them. Cruelty to animals is an epidemic around the world from China to Turkey. However, what is happining in China doesn’t justify what is happining in Turkey. Because China is murdering millions of dogs and cats for their fur,the Unites States is murdering children in Iraq, or Spain is still killing 40,000 bulls a year during bull fights, doesn’t mean Turkey should do the same. Turkish people have unique attitude toward animals. This attidute can be best described as hate. Where there is hate, there will be no tolerance, compassion, respect or love to each other. These are the basic values that holds a nation together and should be never lost regardless.
As a tourist to Turkey for the last 4 years and I was there as recently as June this year yes and I went to the dog shelter in Altinkum Didim and seen for myself what a wonderful job they are doing there all the street dogs have been neutered and injected against rabies etc and they are all tagged I have never met one nasty street dog in fact every night they would make sure that they got you home safe thats the street dog for you they are not wild and as a tourist I do not want any of this done in my name this is barbaric ,cruel and downright nasty to poison them and if thats not enough to dump them where they have no chance of food or water so that they die from hunger and thirst and then bury them in mass graves some still alive and lets not forget they have sign a contract with the EU that this would not happ-en it is against Turkish law to kill any dog or cat on the street unless it is deemed dangerous or ill and no more can be done for the animal I will not support an economy that does this to its animals they have listen to the minority not the majority I and my family have always supported the dog shelter in Didim and will continue to do so because they do look after the animals this shelter is run by Turkish and British ex pats and they are doing a great job this needs to be stopped now leave the animals alone that is thier home and they were there before any tourists and I hope with all my heart that all you mayors will stop these killings otherwise you will have no tourist industry there in Turkey
This disgraceful cruelty towards innocent animals, street dogs and cats, must STOP!! And it must stop immediately, the world is watching as Turkish animals are being killed barbarically. Some of these dogs have been neutered so that they cannot breed and cause overpopulation in certain localities. Why are the authorities in Turkey condoning such terrible cruelty towards innocent creatures? I hope lots of holiday makers will see what is happening and will refuse to travel to a country that condemns the weakest beings to the most horrific, sad deaths. These dogs and cats are lonely, frightened and lost. They are already struggling to survive and then along comes the human clean up wagon and drags them off to be killed or to suffer far away from the area that they know and feel safe in, and far away from the helping hands of animal welfare volunteers. This is truly shameful and I cannot think what kind of people could do this to stray animals. PLEASE have a heart. Leave the street dogs to be cared for by people who really do care!!! Stop killing friendly animals that only want to have a place in the world and to live quietly amongst those that they can trust.
I’m so upset that this barbaric treatment of the voiceless is continuing despite a world wide outcry from compassionate people.
Enough is enough.
please do not kill your street dogs ,this is not fair they have done nothing wrong it is us people who do wrong by the cruelty we do to these animals please build more shelters and save your animals do not destroy them
I will not support Turkey in anyway until they stop this massacre – I will not buy anything Turkish, I will not visit Turkey and I will encourage everyone I know to do the same!
What a sick and diseased government. They seem incapable of caring about anybody or anything. They sound like the Mafia, like they do not need to answer to anybody or anything. NO matter how many complaints, how many petitions, how many good people take care of these dogs, they still go out and massacre every living, sentient dog in sight.
They are not only without souls, they are without minds.
And a diseased mind and soul like this will never see compassion or wisdom in anything. They are monsters. There is no changing them. Only one thing can be done. Political force and action.
They will rot in the hell that they created, one day.
We will never again set foot in Turkey until these issues are addressed by the Government.
TURKEY IN THE EU – i DONT THINK SO !
Seal massacre in Alaska, Bullfight in Spain, dolphin massacre in japan.. OH MY GOD what a civilized world is yours.. pls stop and think a second and stop punishing whole Turkish people because of one idiot..

You are a country which desperately desires to be a member
of EEC. How can you ask this, when the immense cruelty
towards innocents stray dogs and cats is a frequent situation all over Turkey.
Stop immediately the bloody massacre of these poor creatures , apply the Laws and help the Animals Lovers
in order to be considered as a civilised country.
Stop this cruelty. Please someone help the innocent animals. They deserve pitty, love and care.
I’m from Argentina living in California, USA. I know many people in both countries, I will spread the word, this has to be known worldwide!!!
I have to agree with Bev and Maria…. these dogs are obviously loved by the caring locals and tourists, they are not savage and have been vacinated against rabies, so why the killing???? and the way you kill!!!???? have you no heart??? if a dog is rabid, and ‘has’ to be put down, do so in a humane way, NOT BY POISON!!!!
How is this as a senario……………When ‘you’ are old and dependant on others, and your body is failing you and you want love and compassion and a healing hand, we will throw draino/poison down your throat and see how you like that!!!??? then we can watch you as you lose control of your bowels, and vomit until your stomach comes out of your mouth!!!!!!!!! all with a smile on ‘our’ face, Mr Arif Daglar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To the EU… you are a laughing stock!!
It is a country of murderers,I have been over in the past, before i knew this went on, i will never, ever go again,The people responsible should suffer great pain and terminal illness, those people should not be walking this planet, nothing but vile, evil, well let us all keep away from them, but i really hope the animals can get taken from that dammed hell hole, the lives of the animals is of high importance
the question among many is : who made the dogs a Street Dogs?! People of course!
If U read history of Turkey Ull see what mentality they have . I never liked them anyway.
killing cats, seals ,dogs , dolphins …Im just speechless can’t imagine how mentaly sick U need to be to kill innocent creatures !?
I wish is open some hunt season on people who enjoy killing those beautiful angels lol , world would be a better place without those murderers
Tebrikler! Çalışmalarınız tam da bir insana göre.
I am sickened by this horror. I have sent emails to ALL of the addressees listed above, voicing my outrage and letting them know that I am passing this information on to all of my 2300+ online contacts, urging them to join in the boycott of this country and anything that might benefit this country until this atrocity ends for good. God bless these precious babies. BOYCOTT TURKEY!!
I am outraged!
United States Animal Protection request that calls are placed to all Turkish consulates in your closest city.
Make them aware of the cruelty and ask that calls are placed from the consulate to the commissioners, mayors or any government authority.
This policy of killing strays must stop at once!It is disgusting!
I cannot bring myself to support the Turkish economy ever again,i will not consider it as a holiday destination again however, i will support now and always the animals welfare groups that try and protect the street animals from the abuse they are suffering, due to the lack of laws or concerns from the goverment people and mayors, the solution is simple spend some of the tourists money on new shelters, with spaying, vaccinating, feeding.you are soon going to lose tourists by the thousands because of your cruel ways towards the animals,if you need help why not ask WORLD SOCIETY FOR PROTECTION OF ANIMALS to assist you, they are on the website http://www.wspa.org.uk
I would like to clear some points. First of all the Turkish law prohibits killing of stray animals in Turkey. Unfortunately some municipalities do it illegally, because they can get away with it. They do and they deny afterwards, and even if it is proven that they did it, the crime against animal cruelty is considered a “misdemenour”. That’s why animal activists in Turkey is trying to change the law by collecting petitions to bring harsh punishments.
Second, you can not blame the whole nation by saying “I would never visit Turkey” for the cruelty displayed strays by some municipalities. It is pretty judgemental and discriminating. It is like labeling all Germans “Anti-Semitist” for the acts of Hitler.
Third, the Europenas and Americans who are writing posts here, do you know what is going on in your country in terms of animal rights of strays?? If not, let me enlighten you: I am a Turk living in the USA, there are not many stray dogs or cats in the streets in the US just because of the mere fact that they are being euthanised if not adopted within a certain period of time. And it is legal to do so. Do you know how many cats and dogs are euthanised by the state in the US each year; about 15 million.
The only difference between USA and Turkey is: In US it is legal to do euthanise strays, they have no right to exist and roam around in the streets, and these murders take place behind doors whereas in Turkey it is against the law to kill strays but some corrupt municipalities do it and they do it out in the open. Just because Americans or Europeans euthanise the strays “humanely” does not mean that they are more humane or civilzed than Turkey. Wake up, and smell the roses before you accuse the whole nation of being “barbarian”. Look at your own backyard first. If you look at the big picture; US kills 15 million behind closed doors each year without giving any stray the chance to live in the streets, whereas I believe approximately 30.000 strays are killed against the law by corrupt municipalities but millions more roam in the streets freely.
So who is more barbaric and who is more humane??
I’m so disgusted, and mortified after reading and seeing those pictures. Tears are pouring out of my eyes. The man responsible for this should be poisened himself. There are other ways of going about stray animals.
It is 2009 and the world is still not civilized. Our treatment of animals has not improved much since the days of Rome where the slaughter of thousands and thousands of animals occured for the entertainment of citizens.
I push to boycott those countries lacking in a national resolve to end the inhumane treatment of animals; however, the USA still has thousands of Michael Vicks, C.C. Baird, and others, reincarnated from the citizen mobs of Rome.
Where will it end? Will it end?
Turkey has a very sophisticated animal rights law which not many countries have. There are animal haters and animal lovers in Turkey like everywhere else. There are atrocities done against animals in Turkey like in every country on earth. There are also a lot of things done in Turkey to improve the living standards of animals. A lot more than many “civilized” western countries, I should say.
Animal haters contribute to higher human standards on earth as much as bigots and racists. As far as I can see from the comments, this site is advocating hate and slander against Turkey and Turks more than raising sympathy for the animals. I hope that wasn’t the real objective from the start.
What I am disgusted horror of seeing such things
I do not understand the human being he kills for fun when you do for the animal feed
how does one be so cruel
and the law against what she do that?
these people should condemn the death penalty
WHAT A PITTY!!ITS A HUGE CRUELTY.!!ABUSING ANIMALS IS NOT ..GOOD FOR GOD..! ITS UBNORMAL AND NOT CIVILIZED!EDUCATE YOUR CITIZENS.!
P L E A S E ..
