You must know Mevlana Rumi, a 13th century philisopher who preached love and tolerance all his life from central Turkey where he was based. His message was so unique and powerful that it transcended time. It is still with us. In fact, the United Nations’ cultural organization UNESCO declared the year 2007 year of Rumi.
Every year the city of Konya in central Turkey where Rumi was based receives scores of visitors from all corners the world – Europe, United States, Japan. They come here to experience Rumi’s message first hand. Most famously Rumi said: “Come, whoever you are, just come and join us”.
Well come – except if you are a dog. Konya has just earned a very rightful place in this blog. This poor stray dog, together with two others, has been tortured in the streets of Konya for days. It has been traumatized so severely that the vet currently trying to treat it says it can’t even eat any more. It has been put on strong anti-depressants because it lost all faith in life. As the vet says, it “totally shut down” to the world as a result of the pain and torture it went through for days. The other two dogs which were tortured alongside this one are not doing any better. None of this surprises us, it is yet another case of hellcome to Turkey – hell on earth for animals.
We are sorry Rumi, we really are. The land from where you so forcefully preached love has become a land of hatred against animals. We failed to live up to your message, and we are deeply sorry for that.
There is only one option left here, and that is to reverse Rumi’s message:
“Don’t come”. Whoever you are, don’t come to Turkey….
