- in short, anything 4-legged that comes along is being poisoned to death these days…
Luckily, dedicated animal rights defenders in the area are working around the clock to stop this poisoning spree.
Please support their fight. Contact the municipality and tell them you know what is going on there and that you protest the poisoning of innocent stray animals in the strongest terms possible.

Here we go again , this massacre of the strays has to stop once and for all, the world now knows what they are doing all over Turkey, and we will keep on protesting untill this stops, these animals do not deserve to die in this way ,it is cruel inhumane and barbaric cruelty, the municipalities all over Turkey are doing this day in day out, the only way to cure the stray problem is by neuter and release schemes this way no more puppies etc , where there are no more puppies then in time the stray situation will get better, it is against Turkish law what they are doing 5199 ,and they should be made to enforce the law ,this has got to stop now, the world knows what you are doing, and we are all watching and waiting to see if you will abide by your own laws ,stop this barbaric massacre now.

Only an unethical, unintelligent society would bring pain and suffering to animals. This problem is because of humans not taking care of their animals and then you decide to punish the animals by poisening them? This is appalling and Turkey should be ashamed.
I am begging you to stop this treatment of stray animals in your country. I find the photos of these dead animals sad and appalling to the point that I will never want to visit your country and that is sad because I would like to.
Please, please find alternative methods instead of what you are doing. Trap/neuter/release is the only humane solution.

Monsters!!! This must be stopped: these murders must be charged and punished by the law. The law exist, even in Turkey (hard to believe but true: ANIMAL PROTECTION BILL LAW no. 5199) and it must be applied!!!

I would like to clear some points. First of all the Turkish law prohibits killing of stray animals in Turkey. Unfortunately some municipalities do it illegally, because they can get away with it. They do and they deny afterwards, and even if it is proven that they did it, the crime against animal cruelty is considered a “misdemenour”. That’s why animal activists in Turkey is trying to change the law by collecting petitions to bring harsh punishments.
Second, you can not blame the whole nation by saying “I would never visit Turkey” for the cruelty displayed strays by some municipalities. It is pretty judgemental and discriminating. It is like labeling all Germans “Anti-Semitist” for the acts of Hitler.
Third, the Europenas and Americans who are writing posts here, do you know what is going on in your country in terms of animal rights of strays?? If not, let me enlighten you: I am a Turk living in the USA, there are not many stray dogs or cats in the streets in the US just because of the mere fact that they are being euthanised if not adopted within a certain period of time. And it is legal to do so. Do you know how many cats and dogs are euthanised by the state in the US each year; about 15 million.
The only difference between USA and Turkey is: In US it is legal to do euthanise strays, they have no right to exist and roam around in the streets, and these murders take place behind doors whereas in Turkey it is against the law to kill strays but some corrupt municipalities do it and they do it out in the open. Just because Americans or Europeans euthanise the strays “humanely” does not mean that they are more humane or civilzed than Turkey. Wake up, and smell the roses before you accuse the whole nation of being “barbarian”. Look at your own backyard first. If you look at the big picture; US kills 15 million behind closed doors each year without giving any stray the chance to live in the streets, whereas I believe approximately 30.000 strays are killed against the law by corrupt municipalities but millions more roam in the streets freely.
So who is more barbaric and who is more humane??

I am working in Didim which is only a couple of hours away from izmir, to ensure law 5199 is followed. Our mayor and council do not poison or shoot dogs any more. Why is it that only about 4 or 5 towns in the whole of Turkey are following the new laws, and successfully…3000 dogs and almost 1000 cats in approx 4 years neutered….it proves it can be done!! Why are these other towns’ mayors and councils not being penalised? It is a fineable, illegal, criminal offence now to shoot, maim, torture, hurt or poison animals…I cannot understand how so many councils are still doing it and getting away with it…what is the point of passing new laws if they are not enforced and the lawbreakers not penalised?? Thank goodness I live in Didim and we have a mayor who recognises the need to follow the law, recognises that the animals have rights, regardless of whether he agrees with it or not, and addresses the stray animal problem humanely and legally with the required neuter and release programme.
This world is not predominantly threatened by those who wreaking havoc, but by the many who do nothing and just watch….

Thank God there are web sites like this. I live in Izmir. I love Turkiye. BUT I hate how they treat all living creautres here. Sadly life is very cheap, even human life. I can’t find the words to desribe the horrible way animals, birds and sea creatures are treated. Destroy, kill, ruin, torture, wreck- so much evil in such a beautiful country. Unfortunately it is not getting better, children and adults alike are very, very cruel. I don’t have any answers but hit them where it hurts might knock some sense into a few.

just back from Bodrum Turkey on hols and wont be going back, ive been so annoyed about the way animals are being treated there, my daughter who is a big animal lover and is goin to be training as a vet shes 16 years old and even she was so annoyed that she ask me god love her how could we get the animals back home to NorthernIreland to be cared for Turkish people do not care about these poor animals,i seen for myself a camel being beat by a stick its mouth was covered it lokked exhausted and had no water.were i was staying there was a cat with kittens who were treated badly no food or water and got loads of attention from guests at the hotel who gave them food and water they even hide in brick work from the heat basically suffocating and the dogs id seen in the forest on a jeep safari really upset me laying exhaused at the side of the road noone about to feed them or even a drink of water it doesnt cost much to care for these por animals the Turkish people wouldnt like to be treated like this.A TERRIBLE SIN WHATS HAPPENING TO THESE ANIMALS.

As a regular visitor to Turkey I often get overwhelmed at the treatment of the stray cats and dogs there.. why are they so hated ? I love to see them , a few I have now known for several years ..their lives are surely hard enough without cruelty being inflicted on them by humans.. I ask any Turkish person reading this to please do not hurt these animals instead show compassion and offer them food and water, And to the municipal mayors , get your acts together follow Animal welfare law 5199 .
