The city of Agri in eastern Turkey – one of the coldest in the entire country. And the strays here are particularly unfortunate. In warmer places, they somehow manage to survive through the winter. In Agri, they freeze to death. Like the one below that froze to death recently…

Just before she died, she had managed to take some of her puppies away to safety. This one tough wouldn’t leave mummy. It stood by the dead body of its mother for over 2 days until Turkey’s animal rights activists became aware of the situation via journalists. This puppy has now been taken to a municipal shelter in a neighboring city.
Because there is no municipal shelter in the city of Agri itself. Turkish law requires all municipalities to set up shelters for homeless animals – most mayors, however, couldn’t care less. Neither does the mayor of Ekrem Aktas. The stray dogs of Agri are either freezing to death, or being poisoned to death like the ones below:

Mr. Aktas – nothing lasts forever. You can’t avoid the law until eternity. Like it or not, you will have to eventually comply with the law and set up a shelter for stray animals in Agri. This is our question to him: JUST WHEN THE HELL WILL YOU DO IT?
If you want to ask him the same question, please send your messages to:
Mayor of Agri Ekrem Aktas: agribelediyesi62@mynet.com

Sent a message to this lovely type that allows such tragedies occurr with the most absolute indifference…
Can say that I have written mail to the authorities in Turkey now. Have also made contact with a Swedish television about how animals are managed, for now, it may be enough.
Carina in Sweden
I have emailed the Mayor.
Is Turkey going for a world record in Animal abuse for 2009, It is only Febuary and already so many animals have suffered and died .. THIS MUST BE STOPPED !
Noone will ever visit your country until you will protect your animals!! people don’t need to spend their vacations with the barbarians!
.
SHAME ON YOU TURKEY!!!
I will sent a letter too and will crosspost. He must do what he has been elected for! He would deserve a manifestation in front of his office with the pics of these dogs.
I feel sick. I will NEVER visit Turkey again. NEVER. Unless it is with a welfare group to help voiceless, trusting animals betrayed by those who are responsible for them. Because you must face this: humans are responsible for animals which have been domesticated.
Face your responsibilities, people of Turkey. Take action. Stop those who kill animals. Find other solutions.
I have also sent this message to the lovely type.
ASHAME!! TURKEY DOESNT BELONG TO EUROPE!!
Disgusting! shame on you for letting such a thing happen!
Those who witness and support the sadistic actions of the heartless monsters that inflict agony and death on the helpless living creatures of this planet be the animal or human. Need to take another look in the mirror. We are what we tolerate.
You are ever so CRUEL and INHUMANE!! Have you heard of KARMA! This is BARBARISM!!
I’ve also sent an e-mail and will make sure to tell everyone I know to do the same, this is absolutely heartbreaking and immoral and can’t be allowed to go on.
I just sent a letter to the despicable mayor in question.
My goodness! What is our world coming to? How can anyone let this happen? No one should die like this. Please stop putting animals out in the cold and give them a warm home. Put ourselves in the situation. Wouldn’t we want what’s best too?
Please stop poisioning the stray animals in your town.
killers deserve the same end with their victims
please stop it!!! how can people be so crul?!?!
As far as I can see, when the picture was shot, there was no snow over the dead dog (first picture). This picture does not also seem that the snow was cleaned and the first picture was shot after the other ones.
Please do not manipulate the situation. Putting snow on a dead animal in order to make it seem more tragic, THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!
Animals are sensibility, they know the suffering, if we are civilisated, we respect animals like say Gandhi.
Please respect animals.
Could you say me where I can find a petition ? please
It is a matter of civilization to stop this cruelty.
I feel so sad when i see beautifull dogs lying dead because of cruel, greedy mayors and sub human beings, they must have hearts of stone that can look at this and know what is going on and feel nothing, i do not want to take a holiday again in turkey, and this is a shame as the country is pretty, but animal abusers to be should suffer the same death sentence they inflict on the dear cats and dogs, I would poison all those so called mayors and let them know what it feels like
I’m just wondering if you have tried to concact WSPA about this issue about the stray animals in Turkey to get some help for the animals, because WSPA often come around in poorer countries and provide caring and medical help and vaccine and also helps to neuter the cats and dogs.
They have mobile clinics so they can come around also in the more difficult areas.
And btw. I think all of us animal lovers should write a letter to the EU headquarters and tell them, that we think it is about time for them to make a fellow strong animal protectionlaw, that should be equal in all the europarien countries.
Becomes so angry and upset about this that is going on in Turkey. Has the mail to both the governor and the mayor, will be interesting to see if you get any response. Have also made contact with a Swedish television on everything that happens to them poor animals. How hard can it be for the authorities to have shelters for these animals so that they get food and shelter and a lot of love and even castration. It is from the top human errors that there are homeless dogs, are people who have placed their dog, which has flourished since then.
Greetings carina in sweden
What a tragic life/death these beautiful creatures are enduring in Agri.
There is nothing stopping you from doing the right thing set up the shelter spay/neuter and re-home as a Mayor it is your responsibility to lead by example.
WE/DOGS DON’T NEED YOUR EXCUSES…………………….
This is nothing more than barbaric cruelty, I will boycott all Turkish products, and stop coming to Turkey, this has got to stop, the world knows what is going on now, it is disgusting ,and friends around the world are disgusted by what is happening to the dogs all over your country, it was the Turkish people who were one of the first to domesticate the dogs and you are doing this to them , no animal on this planet deserves this , and you ought to be ashamed of yourself for allowing this to happen , Turkey is suppose to be a civilised country, where the people are kind and loving, this is by no means kind and loving , it is utter barbaric cruelty , how would you like it if someone froze you and your family , there is no need for this in this day and age , i URGE YOU TO SHELTER THESE ANIMALS AND LET THEM LIVE A DECENT LIFE
Again, I ask that you place the physical/snail mail ADDRESSES of these criminals who allow innocent, deserted animals to die in this manner. Criminals in suits- mismanaged funds, and obviously – NO COMPASSION IN TURKEY for these most vulnerable, deserving souls who suffer and die in front of monster’s eyes. (Emails are being blocked to Turkish Authorities)
please mayor, save these dogs. they are living beings like us too. to these dogs, their puppies are like what your children and grandchildren are like to you. please don’t turn a blind eye and deaf ear to those poor souls, you are the one that can save them all, why won’t you?
Letter to mayor has been sent! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to help.
I have also written to this smart man. He will ignore it as it everything ignore responsible in Turkey. Many vacationers will ignore this land as a holiday land. They have not earned it. Many people do not want to run any more through blood and grief. They to my dogs are fine only ” mud “? I my politicians, the laws ignore are worse than a mud.
agri, dogs are living things who deserve to be treated with the respect that turkish citizens command for themselves.
please rethink this heartless approach to stray animal issues and respect the inherent lifeforce that is in all creatures.
you can find a way other than killing.
It’s a shame!
I also emailed the Mayor. It is beyond me how someone with a heart can ignore the pain and suffering of innocent, defenseless creatures! So often people fail to put themselves in others’ positions…to feel for others. This is such a disgrace. Humans who do this have no right to call themselves civilized. Mahatma Gandhi said it perfectly…”The moral progress of a nation and its greatness can be judged by the way it treats its animals.”

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-are you truly of the belief, that it really ultimately matters as to the whether or not there was some kind of ‘’staging” involved with regards to these pics?
Snow or no snow-animals are freezing to death in this place. My level of sadness and sympathy for these animals would be present REGARDLESS as to whether or not someone threw snow on them for a photo op,and thats just speculative on your part, anyway.
Lets take stock here-animals froze to death.
-their puppies left homeless.
-suffering involved.
So yes, lets stay focussed on the larger issues here. Thanks
It’s worse than genocide. Human are criminals.
I wil NEVER go to Turkey… Never ever…
[...] http://turkeymassacre.wordpress.com/2009/02/05/lets-freeze-them-to-death/ [...]
I am horrified and disgusted. These poor dogs. Turkey, you need to make some serious changes on governmental level.
This is just barbaric!
I admire the few animal lovers who try their best to help these creatures. Thank you for that.
The rest should hang their heads in shame!
I associate Turkey only with abuse these days. How sad a beautiful country can be tarred by how awful they treat the animals.
A bullet in the head would be 2 good for these nasty people i hope that they and there family get beaten to death by intruders or die a horrible death i.e. cancer or somthing nasty.
Sizleri Allah’a havale ediyoruz..
i’m so sadly
there is no hell in the afterlife for this is HELL!!!!!!
Its a shame… How a country wish to enter EU with this ideology? These things doesn’t even belong to medival years and Turkey never passed medival years as far we all know… Do you thin is passing now? Its rediculous the whole thing!!
Dogs are the best friend of humans!!! Would you kill your best friend??? Think again!!!
Please ask WSPA@WSPA.ORG.UK or website isWWW.WSPA.ORG.UK tha address to write to is 89 ALBERT EMBANKMENT, LONDON, ENGLAND,SE1 7TP they can help arrange shelters that are safe and spaying, vaccinations. But the mayors have got to want to help the animals, but the mayors in Turkey are scum, and to the mayors where in The Karam does it say you should slaughter animals?
I will never go to Turkey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
que peux ton faire pour aider ?
je suis avec les larme au yeux
Sent a letter today to Mr. Atkas.
shame on turkey!
It´s unbeliveble !!!!!! shame to Turkey !!!!! It´s horrible , the worse….
When will you comply with the law and set up a shelter for stray animals? Shame on you for not caring for the animals of Turkey and allowing them to freeze to death. Shame on you.
When will you comply with the law and set up a shelter for stray animals?
Vincenzo
This is cruelty!!!! It cannot allow the competent authorities and responsible can get away!!!! Possible that no institution national or international moves to oblige the Mayor of Agri in Turkey to respect the rights of animals??????
Vincenzo
Continuez!
I will make my comment very short…
Save your own dignity, -save the animals!!
Hey, “anonymous”, who the hell do you think you are to say that?!?

Be so brave to show your identity and assume the responsibility of your words! Who is manipulating what??!!
my goodness, how can this happen, poor poor animals, i am absolutely ashamed to beeing part of humanity,
please, dear animal lovers, lets be united fro the animals, please, get involved, raise your voice and defend the animals, be their voice, this is absolutely awfull what is happening in TURKEY, i really thought it is a nice country, a fairy tale one,,i discover it is the hell on earth, never will go there and i will advice all my friends to not ever go, or untill these atrocities will stop for ever.shame, shame shame!!Tolerating these horrible crimes happening there would mean that we are part of them….
stop the cruelty against dogs now
Looks like it is the same old thing with Turkey! I find those who are responsible politically in Turkey to have putrid morals and they should all be removed from office. There is no way in my lifetime that I will travel to Turkey or buy another product made in Turkey if this does not stop! For God’s sake people, take pride in your country and be humane! The animals in your country don’t deserve the treatment, disregard for their well-being and life, or your disrespect. The people of Turkey need to make a stand, change your system and ensure animals have rights! Then you need to make sure that those laws are enforced and anyone who breaks those laws is punished severely!
To The Mayor of Agri,
Your appointment as mayor is not an honor if you take the honor out of it. By closing your eyes and heart to the responsibility, and the law to shelter these helpless animals you dishonor yourself, and your city and country!
I honestly wonder how you can close your eyes and sleep at night. How do you not see these suffering eyes again and again!!
I know of many people who will not go to Turkey or buy from Turkey, based only on the fact of you known acts of animal abuse.
Their pain and suffering is no less than a human’s!!
save the animals save your soul
peace
Mitzi Ocean
Hi, has anyone created a petition? I think it would would be good to do so and gather also signatures of people who dont want to personally write the mayor. If there is no petition I will create it and put a link here as well as on other sites. Please let me know!
Dear Mr Aktas,
I was horrified to see the pictures of these dead strays dogs in Agri. Many people around the world saw them on the web and were very shocked as well!!
It appears that in your city there is no shelter. You may know that the law 5199 voted in 2004 requires the municipalities to offer a shelter to its stray dogs, especially in winter when it’s known to be very cold in your area. How come you didn’t do what you are paid for? Aren’t you afraid of being seen as indifferent to the fate of animals? Most people do care in Turkey though. It is them who ask our support, and they are not alone to care.
The elections are coming soon, and more and more people in Turkey and abroad watch carefully the tragic situation of stray animals in Turkey. It seems that you could do something but you don’t. Why don’t you ask these animals rights defenders group to help you? They would happily do it. Or don’t you care about non human sentient beings ?
Look at this puppy waiting close the dead body of her mother. What has he done? What was his crime?
Really, this is unbearable and inhuman. We urge you to set a shelter in your town, and ask volunteers to care about these gentle and beautiful creatures. Think about the people who will see you as a Mayor full of compassion. Think about the respect for life for all living beings.
Sincerely,
——————–

Poor little dog!!
It’s really disgusting, you should be ashamed to do this!!!
Really stupid!!!
This is so very sad. How can such cruelty go unnoticed? We were planning a vacation overseas and now I know what country we will definitely will NOT visit. None of my economic stimulus money will ever go to a country like Turkey. They should be ashamed of themselves and do more to help the poor companion animals.
This is utterly shameful – how can any community which considers itself to be civilised allow this? Turkey is a popular destination with Australians, which I could understand – before learning of the horrible atrocities which are so prevalent in that country.
I would certainly never, ever, consider setting foot in a place where such hideous cruelty is rampant, and I make sure to show all my family and friends the images on this site, and elsewhere – Turkey is becoming infamous for its unbelievable brutality.
There is no justification or excuse for such inhuman abuse – if those in authority are not able to cope, there are many Animal Organisations who would willingly assist – those responsible for such shameful cruelty simply do not deserve to be considered as decent human beings.
Petra – I don’t know of a petition for this specific issue – if you do create one, post here and I will certainly promote it on Care2 . The cruelty of these mayors is simply beyond belief in this day and age, something that belongs in the Dark Ages, and unfortunately this is happening all over Turkey.
this is horrible!!! that is so sad that the pup watched his/her momma die!!!! whoever is responsible for not building a shelter better make one or he/she is dirt!!! who looks at that picture and shoves it away without doing anything?!? whoever does better die in hell!!!!!
AUCUN RESPECT A SES ANIMAUX ! ……

APPALLING CRUELTY TO WOLF IN TURKEY!-PETITION TO SIGN!
TO SIGN THE PETITION,COPY THE LINK BELOW BELOW!
The video link, below, is in the Mus, a city of East Turkey. The people
involved have chained a wolf from the leg and making the dogs bite and kill
him. It is a long and painful video. The wolf is crying for help from
another almost dead one and the people are applauding, enjoying the criminal
act. The most awful, chilling scenes, long and shattering to the heart,.
Please don’t let people forget what this creature and his fellow wolf
companion suffered at the hands of these monsters.

Appalling cruelty to wolf in Turkey – Turkish Television http://www.iha.com
The incredible cruelty to a poor wolf (viewer discretion:contains appalling
scenes of animal torture)
Please see the video at link below.
http://www.iha.com.tr/haber/video/Guncel/3612-V-O-11/Vahsete-kahkaha
This is the most cruel attack on a helpless wolf, by the monster villagers
of Mus, Turkey recently. It was on Turkish TV originally, above. Petitions
are on GoPetition and Care2site, including video and on many animal blogs.
Please spread this sad information and encourage signing petition. It is the
lowest level of human cruelty, one of the worst I have viewed outside of the
Devil skinning live dogs in China. DON’T FORGET THIS WOLF’S TERROR AND PAIN…write authorities, protest!

THANK YOU KINDLY.

SHAME ON YOU TURKEY!!!
First of all sorry for my english,
I m really shocked while reading these posts.
You call yourself animal lovers but it seems that you re more like a racist european or american who hates turkey.
Do you know that the biggest wolf population lives in turkey, and in most of the european countries the wolf population EXTINCT!!! So how do you humiliate a nation , call them barbarians. So recently world didnt forget what americans and europeans did to earth, to rainforests , to rivers, to oceans. YOU ruined the earth more than any nation. So you people do know that the most greenhouse gases caused by USA.
I also love animals i love all the living creatures including viruses and bacteria. Because they carry the life to the next generations.
I hate when people suffer animals, ruin forests .. etc.
But i hate racist too, I hate hypocritic people who disguised like an animal lover.
Turkish people are not barbarians nor animal killers, some parts of Turkey are extremely poor and ignorant. Especially the eastern and south eastern part ,
you cannot blame the whole country for these bad events, in these mountain villages there is not even a road or police department.
These bad events are happening everywhere. I watch them all over the world in nat geo wild, discovery channel . Humanity is the same everywhere in the world.
There are countless times that i saved animals, i rescue them , i even rescue turtles when i see them on the road and take them to forest again, i rescue dogs. These are not the talents of a race. This is inside what makes us human.
There are lots of wild animals live in turkey including wolf, bear, fox, wild boar…. which me or my friends see all of them.
I have emailed CNN International – I suggest they do a story on the animal abuse in Turkey – would certainly be of interest to anyone thinking about vacationing there.
Noone will ever visit your country until you will protect your animals!! people don’t need to spend their vacations with the barbarians!
murder
we must stop them but blaming the whole country because of some sick people is not the solution. this happens all around the world just look around. this site use animals to blame turkey. Why don’t they show massacres in their countries or what they do in iraq.please just think
what a shame.. but never forget that this is not to blame the whole country and its all people. plz also visit http://www.tuzlaninkopekleri.org and http://www.kadikoyunkopekleri.org to see how ppl are working to save stray animals’ life in Turkey. There are just a few of them..
This has got to stop, it’s just plain wrong. Never will I visit Turkey or have anything to do with Turkey while this continues to go on.
“we must stop them but blaming the whole country because of some sick people is not the solution. this happens all around the world just look around. this site use animals to blame turkey. Why don’t they show massacres in their countries or what they do in iraq.please just think”
Beautifully put, Asdas.
