The link between tourism and rabies
We are aware that the title sounds odd… Rabies is a viral disease and tourism, is well, tourism. Here is how they mix though: in the land called Turkey.
Turkey is a holiday legend. It is one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean; the coastal towns of Antalya, Alanya, Bodrum, Marmaris, Didim and you name it host millions of visitors every summer from all over Europe and the United States.
Rabies is a deadly disease which can be transmitted from animals to humans. Until the year 1885 when a brilliant man called Luis Pasteur developed the first vaccination against it, rabies was a real menace.
Come to Turkey 2008, rabies is still a menace but not because it really exists, except in a few isolated cases… It exists, however, as a perfect excuse for the Turkish authorities to initiate a pre-tourism season extermination campaign against stray animals every summer.
Admit it: nothing destroys the image of a picture perfect Turkey more than scores of stray animals desperately searching for food and water while you and your friends are sunbathing…This is why there will be a “rabies outbreak” right around the time you are packing your bags for your dream summer vacation in Turkey. A theoretical outbreak that is so that stray animals can be legitimately killed, right before you arrive, and just so you don’t see them around.
A “rabies outbreak” was announced in Antalya a couple of days ago. Seasoned animal rights defenders knew that this meant they would find mass graves of stray animals in the area – they went out and found 20… Puppies buried in them as well. Some of the dogs buried were carrying marks indicating that they had actually been vaccinated against rabies. Just announced, there is a new “rabies outbreak”, mind you, around Bodrum. If Bodrum’s local authorities have been any good at it, 20 more mass graves should follow there.

No body can prove these happen more in Turkey than in the UK or India, or say China. So instead of attacking a country you have to realise that this is a global problem and the solutions have to be found, not only for Turkey but for everywhere that these take place.

This is unacceptable and no one killing/torturing those innocent animals can make me or anyone else belive that they have hearts.I want to tell you that many Turkish citizens including me hate ministers who try to introduce themselves as a friend of nature&animals but dont even lift a finger to stop this. What kind of person could close his eyes to this massacre is also a question that many people ask here as well. Thanks a lot for bringing this up. It is good to see how many people actually care about this. I agree that tourism boycott could be effective but the most important thing is that we need a revolution in people’s brains which makes me feel pessimistic under these circumstances. An entire colony of threatened monkeys, including two thumb-sized babies, were among a haul of rare species stolen from a zoo, police have said.
Experts fear the four-week-old black-eared marmoset infants, taken from Exmoor Zoo in Bratton Fleming, Barnstaple, Devon, could die.
A pair of white-fronted marmosets, two pairs of parrots, a pair of cockatoos and a pair of Amazons were also taken.
Zoo curator Danny Reynolds said the thieves were “stealing to order”.
The baby primates belong to a species classified as threatened. This colony was the only breeding colony in the UK.

They are about 18in tall and normally live in the Amazonian rainforests of Brazil.
Mr Reynolds said: “Those two little babies are going to suffer. It’s what is going to happen to them that worries me.

Social animals
Monkeys are a social animal and the stress does not always show immediately, he explained.
He said it could take a month before these environmental changes affect them.
Mr Reynolds added: “The babies were so young that we have not even named them yet because they are only just reaching an age where we could feel safe that they might survive.”
The white-fronted marmosets are an endangered species also from the Amazon.
Mr Reynolds said: “These people have no right targeting a zoo.

Bu vahşet dolu görüntüler , gazetelerde , tvlerde bile gösterilemiyor , ancak web sitelerinde yayınlanabiliyor.
Uluslararası kürk tüccarları , oyuncakçılar , ithalatcılar , tekstilciler , bu ucuz malları Çin’den almayı tercih ediyorlar. Çin’de uygulanan vahşeti bilen tüccarlar, ürünlerdeki Çin Malı etiketini çıkartıp yerine sahte etiket bile koyabiliyor. Ancak tüketici maalesef bunun hangi koşullarda elde edildiğini bilmiyor.
İşkencelere maruz kalan, diri diri derileri yüzülen bu hayvanların kürklerini satın almaktan kaçınmak için kürk manto kullanmamak da yeterli olmuyor. Anahtarlıklardan terliklere, , şapkalara , oyuncaklara kadar, Çin malı ya da Çin’den ithal edilmiş özellikle kedi ve köpekten oluşan ürünlere karşı tüketicileri uyarıyoruz.
Şunu da özellikle belirtmek isteriz ki burada protesto edilen sadece kürk üretimi değil aynı zamanda Çin’İn insanlığa , yaşam hakkına , tüm hayvanlara karşı yaptığı vahşi eylemlerdir. Ancak Çin hükümeti, ucuz kürk üretimi adına, diğer ülkelerle kıyaslanamayacak bir vahşete göz yummaktadır. Ucuz işgücü için insanlık dışı koşullarda çalıştırılan insanlar kadar hayvanlar da vahşi kapitalizmin kurbanı olmaktadır.
Biz, şu anda aramızda bulunamayan , Türkiye’deki bir çok duyarlı insanı , derneği ve vakfı Çin hükümetini, hayvanların ve adını bile bilmediğimiz bir çok insanın yaşam hakkı nedeniyle maruz kaldığı işkencelere son vermesini istiyoruz. Bu eylemin sadece Türkiye ile sınırlı olmadığını dünyanın yaklaşık 40 ülkesindeki 70 kentindeki bulunan Çin konsoloslukları ve elçilikleri önünde yapıldığını tekrar vurgulamak istiyoruz.
Çin hükümeti bu yasal ve fiili düzenlemeleri yapana kadar eylemlerimize ve protestolarımıza devam edeceğiz. 2008’de barış ve kardeşlik adına yapılan tüm dünyadaki arkadaşlarımızla kararlaştırdığımız üzere OLİMPİYATLARI SONUNA KADAR BOYKOT edeceğiz. İçinde yaşam hakkı barındırmayan , bunun için çaba göstermeyen bir ülkenin olimpiyatları yapmasını ise makyaj olarak kabul edeceğiz.
Çin , yaşam hakkına karşı gerekli tedbirleri almadığı sürece geçen sene 20 ülke iken bu yıl 50 ülke ve farklı 70 kentte yaptığımız protesto , her sene yine aynı anda tüm dünyada giderek artarak sesi çıkamayan , dilleri olmayan “canlar” için Çin kulaklarını sonuna kadar açana kadar ve inadından vazgeçene kadar yapılacaktır.

As a British person living in Turkey, I am upset b your website. I know that the government is working hard to change people’s views and attitude towards animals. They have set up a programme to neuter, vaccinate and release the stray dogs as there aren’t enough facilities to house them all. You shouldn’t be so quick to condemn the Turks as British people aren’t that great at looking after animals either, only difference in our country is that there are more animal shelters that rescue the animals!

I’m portuguese, and infortunatelly in portugal we have exactly the same horror, but with one exception we hide it more. We don’t show our slaughter houses.
The horror that we, animal lovers, feel when we see this images is not understand by everibody, but like PETA we must show everibody what happens not only in turkey but also in Portugal, US, Uk, Spain, etc, etc, etc….
So i don’t think that prevent people from going to turkey will help the animals. The world must know what happends in all the countries and act to prevent.

I love Turkey, its people And its dogs , But I cannot stand by knowing that dogs i have come to know over the last few years are now being merclessly killed or dumped in the mountains, This is true !, It is happening now in Altinkum Didim, And an active campaign is going on to stop any more dogs ” disappearing ” The officials are lying to the people in Didim, They are saying the dogs are at the shelter…Well I know that they are not ! The dogs are dead !

Attention must be paid to this horrible act. The authorities must realize that tourism will suffer greatly from all over the world once the word gets out about what has REALLY happened here. The truth will REALLY hurt.
I agree that humans have no right to torture and massacre dogs and other animals, regardless of what country they are from. I am Canadian and in one province once a year, ppl club, bludgeon, shoot, stomp on, and c-section live females for the baby seals. Ppl wanted to boycott Canada, ppl judged Canadians, but I HATE what happens to those seals, I would never harm a seal, I don’t buy fur, I don’t eat meat, but should I be hated because of what country I come from and because of what my country does to seals? I cannot control what the government does or doesn’t do. I cannot personally go and rescue all of those seals. The ppl living in Turkey who love animals and treat them with respect deserve better treatment from the world. If nothing else, at least acknowledge that not every person in Turkey tortures animals. The best way to end this horrible treatment of animals is to educate those who are at fault, and yes, make it public, get the world’s attention, but don’t point fingers at an entire country because of some ignorant ppl.

I am going to Bodrum next year (2009) for 6 months, I have been going Turkey for 11 years and every year i fill my families suitcases with dog & cat treats and spend atleast £150 on dog & cat food.
I have only just descovered your site after mnay years of wondering if there was any1 else out there who cared like i do. Now i have found many.
While i am out there next year i want to do more than feed a few dogs & cats i want to help try and put a stop to this. Does anyone know of any organisations out in Bodrum that i can connect with next year and help stop this? I would really love to do my bit as spending alot of time there i would love to know that i have done something to help save atleast 1 dog and cat. Asshole, don’t blame one country (Turkey). To be fair, list all countries that are in same position, say the WHOLE WORLD (about 193 counties). Cruelties are seen anywhere on the whole world. I called you an asshole, because you blackmail Turkey as single country.
Of course most people don’t hurt any animals, except butchers or assholes, same category as where you yourself are, too.

I eat beef (sorry), this is because i’m human (and all of you other guys/girls, say us humans), our biologic past is built on it. It would only stop, if there was no humans on earth. But this is not the solution to wipe ourselves off the earth, better if so lets erase the universe. No, this can not happen. One solution is to put pressure on (local) governments. Only they can put pressure on single citizens to stop cruelty. Only they can put laws that forbid cruelty. Else we as single persons have no power and it won’t change any bit whatever we do on our own.
If you slaughter an animal as seen in photos in this blog or hidden meat factories in all countries, it’s the same. Humans as a race do eat meat, they kill animals for fun, for money, for business, or out of stupidity or due hate in them, and kill humans, too. That’s why we weren’t extinguished by evolution and we all survived until today (including YOU!). We humans infected the billion years old life on earth, as parasites, counting with exponentially growing numbers, more than 7 billion, with every spot that we mark where we built homes. It a disease, the world overrun by us as parasites and all the rest nature including those tortured mammals are to suffer.
Turkey is in opposite very very very animal friendly country. There are monkey brains slurped out of alive monkeys, after their skull is opened (while alive) which are fixed in middle of round tables, bleeding crying shouting, in some country (China). Some country even roasts and eats dead born human babies (Asian country and very developed: Japan) as a delicacy. I believe those people are minority.
Humanity (this only being few people who understood the laws of universe, say mathematics, the language in which the universe is written, someone like Plato, Newton, Einstein, naming some famous ones, and all other infamous people with very high IQ having studied to fullest having degrees and worked hard for science as a community) is what is needed. This is what we need to be, to understand us and our surrounding. If we’re dumb, average, lying, cheating, ignorant, racist, parasitic, stupid, alcohol drinking, feeling based thinking, monthly salary receiving, TV shows watching, ICQ chatting, low and mid level IQ people (99.99 % of humans including myself), this cruelty will go on. If you can say that you know more than Prof. Steven W. Hawking (he was wrong, there are no black holes with endless density, which is a singularity from wrongly formulated mathematical function), then the world will be safe and free from any injustice and cruelty. To be able to say it, go learn what you are, learn everything, push your limits, especially about the universe. Do not learn from ancient sources like religion books or your culture, or your teachers or your parents or from libraries or newspapers, those are old news from past, there is no enlightenment there. Believe that. I am an American living in turkey for my work wich is to help improve the health care for children in rural turkey. For all of the people who have commented that the dog problem is not that big of a problem in turkey, shame on you. You will never fix this problem until you face the reality of it. I feed over a 100 dogs a day in a park near my home, they are sick, starved and in pretty bad condition. I watch you turks kick at them, use that nasty sshhhsk sound as you throw good food into the bin that you could have just as easily dropped to the ground. I invite my friends here but always warn them about what they will see, the disgusting heartbreaking problem of strays in the street. Last month the local government started dumping new casterations in the forest near my house, no food, no water, just dumped. Why spend the money to casterate so you can slowly starve them to death. I also want to coment on the Britt who lives in istanbul and thinks they are fixing the issue, what are you blind? And lets me ask, did you ever try to help with the issue for animals in Britian? Or where you as helpful there as you are here in turkey?
Unless all of turkey starts an educational, capture, castrate and release program, set up feeding stations and build shelters this problem will not see an end. The first step is to get everyone to wake up and see the issue, not start some political trash talk about people being afraid of turks etc, ignorance is what got you in this mess. Its not much better in your health care system, go east my freinds, see the poverty witness the problems faced by kurds and others who live in desperate poverty. I often feel Ataturk rolls in his grave when he sees how Turks slowly kill his dream. After reading most of these comments, I really feel saddend about how ignorant people still are in this country, I feel sad to know how great Turkey could be and know the only thing that stops this is the very people who claim to love thier country so much.

i travel to turkey many times a year and NOBODY should say that this DOESNT happen there and that the country is clean..
i dont judge all turkish people BUT what i saw with my own eyes is DISGUSTING! most of the turks dont care about animals,trash is more worth than dogs in turkey..
every tourist can see this,just look in the backstreets.. just look how little turkish boys are beating dogs,how they shoot dogs,how they kick dogs.. so my question to the turks,what would you do if this happen to your ANNE or to your ABLA? dont say it is not the same,its the same! animals have feelings,animals have hearts.. they got MUCH MORE than many turks! those who do this,should bury in hell but im sure ALLAH will find the right place for heartless people like that!

You could call it Hellcome to North America, England, Holland, Germany, France, C H I N A, Africa, Asia, Europe, South America or whatever country or continent you can name because torture and killing of animals exists everywhere. Only here in Holland for instance it happens more behind closed doors of shelters, slaughterhouses and laboratory’s under the watch full eye of the so called Catholic and Protestant Christian government.
