I do understand the outrage. I myself have been deeply touched by stray dogs in Turkey. I was too young back then to think beyond my days there while on vacations. But today I wish I had adopted at least the one or two or did SOMETHING.
Pointing fingers isn’t going to help.
Perhaps instead connect with organizations already in the area and help them raise funds for spay/neuter programs, adoptions, shelters and most importantly outreach to the public.
I won’t sign this petition as I just don’t think it will accomplish anything positive.
As for myself – my experience all these years ago has made me a local animal welfare activist. My house is always full with foster animals and I take every opportunity to help educate the public about volunteer work and the importance of spaying and neutering.
Maybe some of your readers can channel that helplessness they feel into this sort of work.
And yes, please connect with some local rescue organizations and see what they need. Much better placed energy than screaming at a government that doesn’t even have their human rights sorted out yet…. hmmmm

There is no word to say.My familiy and I trying to keep animals protected from from wild city life and from insane people, but our and a few organisation’s effort were not enough.We are fully support your efforts to stop animal killers. Convictions for animal cruelty in the UK fell by 20% last year, according to new figures released by the RSPCA.
The charity said the 2006 fall to 1,647 convictions showed people were starting to heed its animal welfare message.
It also said new legislation introduced in April was enabling it to intervene earlier to prevent acts of cruelty.
The RSPCA review of 2006 did, however, include “shocking” examples of cruelty including a starving dog forced to eat dead companions to survive.
The charity’s 2006 cruelty statistics showed overall that, although there were more complaints investigated, there were fewer convictions than the previous year.
Dog offences down
The figures reveal that 122,454 complaints of animal cruelty were investigated in 2006, up 10.5% from 2005.
A total of 898 defendants were convicted of a total of 1,647 offences in 2006, down 8% on the previous year.
How complaints were dealt with
There were 681 court orders banning offenders from keeping animals, down 9% on the 2005 figure.
There were 164,110 rescues and collections and 4,222 verbal warnings to prevent offences being committed, up 7.6% and 10% respectively.
It’s encouraging to see a fall in animal cruelty generally and we hope that’s a sign that our animal welfare messages are being heard

A total of 38 prison sentences were imposed, compared with 28 in 2005, and there were 51 suspended prison sentences, up from just three the year before.
Offences against dogs and cats were down by 15.6% and 9.5% respectively, with 891 convictions for crimes against dogs and 240 against cats.
Starvation and failure to call a vet featured heavily in the worst cases, the RSPCA said.
The statistics revealed an increase in offences against horses, ponies and other equines, with 104 offences in 2006, up 33% from 2005.

RSPCA director general Jackie Ballard said the figures were encouraging and the Animal Welfare Act was helping inspectors.
“It’s encouraging to see a fall in animal cruelty generally and we hope that’s a sign that our animal welfare messages are being heard,” she said.
“But the rise in crime against horses and ponies is a very worrying anomaly.
“Today’s figures refer to last year and although the new Animal Welfare Act is only a few months old, so far it seems to be working extremely well.
“Many front-line RSPCA inspectors are reporting that people are responding well to the new law, and increasingly we are able to help prevent animal suffering before it begins.”
‘Starved to death’
Among the serious acts of cruelty to animals found by the RSPCA in 2006 was a dog in Stratford, London, starved to death in a couple’s garden.
Inspectors also found an emaciated cat in County Durham that was so ill and frail it could not lift its face from the floor. Its owners saw it every day but did nothing, the RSPCA said.
In another case 1,000 hens were forced to survive on maggots and egg shells after falling into a droppings pit and being left.
Mrs Ballard said: “Neglect has always been the most common form of cruelty. But these cases defy belief.
“Its just so shocking to discover pet food in homes where animals literally starved to death waiting for their owners to open a packet or a tin.
“Animals depend totally on their owners to meet their day-to-day needs. Ignoring this basic responsibility has heart-breaking consequences.”

Hi there! At last! Thank you for any good you do. I’ve been living in Turkiye for over 25 years and I do love the place and the people but the problem with cruelty, torture, neglect etc against animals, birds, fish, reptiles, insects is awful and heartbreaking.
Nobody listens to us animal lovers here and it’s great you’re doing something like this. The authorities need some shock treatment. Hit them where it hurts! Their pockets. Tourism is the mirror of this country but the image portrayed is not very humane unfortunately.
FYI You tube is banned in Turkey, they want to ban it permanently.
I try to feed as many street cats as I can, as well as dogs. We get them neutered and injected. It’s a hard job on one’s own but at least we are doing s’thing.

I’m not defending the “kill animals however you want” mania. Me and my wife survived a 12 hr. old dobermann and let her grow without cutting her ears and tail. We protest every dog owner who “cut” their “friends” for esthetic concerns whenever we see on our way.

I’m not saying what is happening in Turkey is right but how about just a month ago in the “Eropean country Germany in the name of ART” a dog has been atteched to a wall and leaved to starve to death and so many PEOPLE!!! pay money to see this crime and eventually he died. But no one say ohh com’on let’s not to go Germany again never or let’s punish them what they’ve done!!!!
Then again 2 days ago BBC chanel show us how England tretaed chickens for free range eggs, and how they’ve been tortured till death. Then again no one say anything ohh noo let’s not to go there!!
It is true something wrong and something must be done but not punishing and showing all Turkish like a monster because it is not true.

Greetings all,
I am saddened that it has come to this to get the attention of authorities on the plight of animals, mainly dogs, in Turkey. It is heart-wrenching for me to read these stories, especially when our two dogs and blind cat are comfortably sleeping on the couch.
It is unfortunate that the minister responded in a dismissive manner rather than proposing or discussing programs to address the issue. He comes across as short-sighted and insincere to think this issue will go away by showing a photo of himself holding a puppy. Pointing out what happens during the war in Iraq or with animals in other countries, as some commentators have chosen to do, is irrelevant, distracts from the main issue, and does absolutely no good for animals in Turkey.
Yes, there are many examples of animal cruelty in many developed countries including Europe and US. However, the general public sentiment about dogs and animals is much more accepting and favorable, and state and federal laws are well established and are strictly enforced to punish those who brutalize animals. Not only are laws deficient or rarely enforced in Turkey, some municipality participate in the brutality of animal care. Why there is such negative sentiment in Turkey … or in Egypt or China… I can think of many reasons but that’s not why I’m posting here.
I am not asking you to shut the site down, yet at the same time, I consider the boycott approach unfair to many hardworking and very friendly, hospitable Turks who depend on tourism for their income and livelihood. However there needs to be a compromise. Since you made your point and claim only to be for the animal wellfare, I would ask all of you to take the next step and get involved in this cause. There is a handful, albeit amazingly dedicated volunteers in Turkey who work their hearts out for the well-being of stray animals. As someone who is involved with animal organizations in USA, I can tell you that their level of energy and commitment surpasses that of most volunteers I have seen, plus their determination in working with mostly ignorant municipality workers should be admired.
So I would kindly ask for those of you who truly care about the animal rights issues and the well-being of mainly the stray dogs in Turkey to help either by donations or by participating as needed.

Killing people in Iraq, Afganistan, or else where doesn’t justify murdering animals in Turkey. Shooting, raping, burning, poisening animals are just fundamentaly wrong. There are many humane ways to deal with the stray animal population. On the other hand, the problem isn’t only stray animals that are being slaughtered the most painful way on a daily basis in Turkey, but also the mentality and the attitude of Turkish people toward animals . 90% of the population in Turkey hates animals because for them it is either a sin to have pets or they are dirty and should be killed. It is such a shame that a country that is so proud and think himself superior cannot even show the most basic compassion and mercy toward God’s weak creations. So how does this nation can show the same to each other? Government doesn’t give a rat’s ass about animals. They passed the 5199 Animal Protection Law just to show of the EU, which is being consistently violated by the Government branches. The staff of Municipalities are getting pay checks not to perform what is on their job description but to go out and shoot the animals with shut guns,poisen them or get them together and throw them to woods. What a disgrace?The animals’ destiny in the hands of volunteers who work day in and day out to make the things happen which as you can guess not enough. I want all EU countries and every Turkish citizen to put more pressure on the Turkish Government. Otherwise, the massacre will continue.

If you intend to help the animals in Turkey, come to Turkey and help them. If you can not come, donate to Turkish efforts for increasing the quality of life for animals.
If you witness cruelty towards animals, notify the authorities. Animals are protected by law in Turkey. The authorities may not be too anxious to abide by those laws but if you are adamant, they have no other choice.
Boycotting the country will not aid the animals at all. People with your kind of approach to problems may even find the poor animals responsible for their own financial loss.
If your intention is helping the animals in Turkey. Do so.

As a shelter volunteer I can say that It’s a dream for us to have a global action against cruelty to the ownerless animals in Turkey; thus this is the fight that we’ve struggled to win for years.
Therefore we’d be happy to see you the world people next to us to give support; in case you’re sincere in your action that, it’s against the cruelty in Turkey, not directly to the Turkey as a country.

I have been to Turkey and I have seen the stray dogs, the neglect, the pain, the longing for a home, the starvation, the sadness.
I will never return as it saddened me so much that I still cry for the neglected dogs that I saw now, months after I returned home.
I hope the Turkish authorities and more importantly the Turkish people change their attitude towards animals.
There is hope as time progresses and people learn. All countries were like this once when it came to treatment of animals.

I eat beef (sorry), this is because i’m human (and all of you other guys/girls, say us humans), our biologic past is built on it. It would only stop, if there was no humans on earth. But this is not the solution to wipe ourselves off the earth, better if so lets erase the universe. No, this can not happen. One solution is to put pressure on (local) governments. Only they can put pressure on single citizens to stop cruelty. Only they can put laws that forbid cruelty. Else we as single persons have no power and it won’t change any bit whatever we do on our own.
If you slaughter an animal as seen in photos in this blog or hidden meat factories in all countries, it’s the same. Humans as a race do eat meat, they kill animals for fun, for money, for business, or out of stupidity or due hate in them, and kill humans, too. That’s why we weren’t extinguished by evolution and we all survived until today (including YOU!). We humans infected the billion years old life on earth, as parasites, counting with exponentially growing numbers, more than 7 billion, with every spot that we mark where we built homes. It a disease, the world overrun by us as parasites and all the rest nature including those tortured mammals are to suffer.
Turkey is in opposite very very very animal friendly country. There are monkey brains slurped out of alive monkeys, after their skull is opened (while alive) which are fixed in middle of round tables, bleeding crying shouting, in some country (China). Some country even roasts and eats dead born human babies (Asian country and very developed: Japan) as a delicacy. I believe those people are minority.
Humanity (this only being few people who understood the laws of universe, say mathematics, the language in which the universe is written, someone like Plato, Newton, Einstein, naming some famous ones, and all other infamous people with very high IQ having studied to fullest having degrees and worked hard for science as a community) is what is needed. This is what we need to be, to understand us and our surrounding. If we’re dumb, average, lying, cheating, ignorant, racist, parasitic, stupid, alcohol drinking, feeling based thinking, monthly salary receiving, TV shows watching, ICQ chatting, low and mid level IQ people (99.99 % of humans including myself), this cruelty will go on. If you can say that you know more than Prof. Steven W. Hawking (he was wrong, there are no black holes with endless density, which is a singularity from wrongly formulated mathematical function), then the world will be safe and free from any injustice and cruelty. To be able to say it, go learn what you are, learn everything, push your limits, especially about the universe. Do not learn from ancient sources like religion books or your culture, or your teachers or your parents or from libraries or newspapers, those are old news from past, there is no enlightenment there. i am an animallover from turkey, and as you know the situation is same in your countries . for example in the USA or some europian countries the goverments kill the animals “behind the doors”, and because of this there is no animals on the streets.unfortunatelly the goverment of turkey kills “some of them” but your goverments kill “all of them”, we can (animal lovers in turkey) help them, but you can not because there is no dogs or cats on your streets.

But i must say if you must kill them which i dont think is a totally bad thing as I hate to see them walking about half starved or with injuries, do it Humanly and give them a needle, most people would support that!!

“Kısırlaştırma ile gerekli aşı ve bakımlarının yapılması amacıyla toplanması gereken sokak köpeklerini toplamada belediye ekipleri yetersiz kalınca Kaymakamlık, zarar vermeden 5 adet sokak köpeğini yakalayarak barınağa teslim eden vatandaşlara şarjlı elektrik süpürgesi hediye etme uygulamasını hayata geçirdi.
Vatandaşlar şimdiye kadar 30 ila 40 civarında sokak köpeğini toplayarak barınağa teslim etti.
Yakaladıkları 5 köpeği zarar vermeden yakalayarak barınağa getiren vatandaşlara hediyeleri Taraklı Kaymakamı Ömer Faruk İlhan tarafından verildi.
Barınağın açılış töreninde konuşan İlhan, ilçede sokak köpeklerinden dolayı vatandaşlardan çok ciddi şikayetler aldıklarını söyledi.
Özellikle sokak köpeklerinin okul çıkış saatlerinde çocuklara saldırdığını kaydeden İlhan, “Biz ekolojik denge açısından köpek itlafına karşıyız. Bunu engellemek için hem insanları köpeklerden hem de köpekleri insanlardan korumak adına bir barınak yaptık. İlçemizin maddi imkanları yetersiz olduğu için köpeklerin yakalanıp barınağa getirilmesinde iki yöntem uygulanabilirdi. Bunlardan biri iğne kullanma yöntemiydi. Bir diğeri ise hayvanlarla iyi iletişim kurabilen vatandaşlarımızdan yardım almaktı. İğne yöntemi bir yere kadar gitti. Bir süre sonra vatandaşlarımızı teşvik edebilme adına 5 tane köpeğe zarar vermeden getiren kişiye bir tane şarjlı elektrik süpürgesi verme vaadinde bulunduk. Kampanyamız etkili oldu. Köpeklerimiz barınağa getirildi. Şuana kadar 30 ila 40 sokak köpeği toplandı.” şeklinde konuştu.
Taraklı’nın önceki yıllarda köpek itlafıyla ülke gündemine oturduğunu ve bu anlamda kötü bir imaja sahip olduğunu kaydeden İlhan, yaptıkları örnek çalışmayla Taraklı’nın tekrar Türkiye gündemine geleceğini vurguladı.
İlhan, yaptıkları çağdaş ve modern çalışmayla Taraklı’nın önceki dönemine ait kötü izleniminin de ortadan kalkacağını dile getirdi.
Beş adet sokak köpeğini yakalayıp barına getirerek şarjlı elektrik süpürgesini alan Ceyhun Celal Uzun ise, “Köpekleri yakalamak zor oldu. Ekmek veriyorum ama yanaşmıyorlar. Kısa süreli kovalamacanın ardından köpekleri yakaladım.” diye konuştu.”
